MakeMKV is your one-click solution to convert video that you own into a free and patents-unencumbered format that can be played everywhere. MakeMKV is a format converter, otherwise called "transcoder".
It converts the video clips from a proprietary (and usually encrypted) disc into a set of MKV files, preserving most information but not changing it in any way. The MKV format can store multiple video/audio tracks with all meta-information and preserve chapters.
The use case for most users of PG especially those use remote servers will be to handle full-disc Blu-Ray or DVD releases in either ISO or extracted formats. Sometimes you may want to make your own remux with your custom choice of audio language tracks and subtitles, or maybe you are obsessed with naming chapters. Also, if you are a big fan of a particular movie (or the collection the movie is in as a whole), you may appreciate the ability to rip the extras such as deleted scenes, featurettes, BTS interviews/documentaries, trailers, etc. Usually, you can use the reviews from a site like blu-ray.com to match up the timecodes of the extras to what you see in MakeMKV's list of titles to make sure you get everything you want out of the disc image! I haven't tested full UHD disc releases yet in MakeMKV, but I believe they are supported like normal Blu-Rays. For users running this at home, you can modify the docker container to add support for your optical drive so that you may rip your own legally obtained media!
MakeMKV is still doing that thing where they keep giving out monthly beta keys for free that basically make the program work just as if you had purchased it. The Docker container is set to automatically update the beta key every month so that you don't have to go hunting on their forum for it.
Just launch it from the community appstore!
A program like this shouldn't really require a cron job backup, but the option is there if you want it. Not much configuration needed. I always like to turn on expert mode because that lets me name the titles and the audio tracks and chapters if I want to.
