Use Case: Site Book

This is mainly intended to replace the old paper Carolingian Site Book, and the current Google Docs based version. It should make it easy for any member of the Barony to add Sites on an ad-hoc basis when they are at an interesting site, and then for folks to follow up and add more details as they go.

We have a fairly long list of information that is potentially worth collecting. No given site is likely to use all of the fields, but some will use many.

Analysis

This is an important use case for photographs, and specifically for mobile upload of photographs. One of the main arguments for a Querki App on smartphones is to make it simple to create a new record with an attached photo.

Similarly, this argues for a geocoding feature. This has several implications. We need a geocode lat/long data type. We would like the Querki App to be able to note the current location and add it to the record -- this might automatic, but it's likely better to ask whether to attach the current location. We want to be able to snarf geocode locations from an address using Google's APIs. (I assume Google provides an API for this?) And we want to be able to display a data set in Google Maps -- "show me all the event sites within three miles of Arlington Center".

Features

  • Feature - Mobile: This is one of the more compelling use cases for creating a mobile Querki app for smartphones. Beyond the usual desire to do data entry from mobile, this has two aspects that are hard to do from the browser: uploading photographs, and recording the current location.

  • Feature -- Geocoding: We want to be able to record the current location while we are at a site. We want to be able to fill in a location from the desktop, via, eg, a Google Maps interface. We want to be able to display the location of one Site or many on Google Maps.

  • Feature -- Photographs: Being able to take pictures on-the-fly and easily add them to a record would be very powerful. Note that we will likely want to add pictures both at record creation time (when first noting that the site exists), and at edit time (to take detailed notes during site walk-through).
