Fix model weight load bug with multigpu #40

Fixes # .

Fix the bug where model weights are not loaded when multigpu is used.

Non-breaking change (fix or new feature that would not break existing functionality).
Breaking change (fix or new feature that would cause existing functionality to change).
New tests added to cover the changes.
In-line docstrings updated.
