What is South-South cooperation?

South-South cooperation is a broad framework for collaboration among countries of the South in political, economic, social, cultural, environmental, and technical domains. Involving two or more developing countries, it can take place on a bilateral, regional, sub-regional, or interregional basis. Developing countries share knowledge, skills, expertise, and resources to meet their development goals through concerted efforts. Recent developments in South-South cooperation have taken the form of increased volume of South-South trade, South-South flows of foreign direct investment, movements toward regional integration, technology transfers, sharing of solutions and experts, and other forms of exchanges.

What is triangular cooperation?

Triangular cooperation is a form of collaboration in which traditional donor countries and/or multilateral organizations facilitate South-South initiatives of two or more developing countires through the provision of funding, training, management, and technological systems, as well as other forms of support.
What is the mandate of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation?

The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) was established in 1978 by the UN General Assembly with the mandate to promote, coordinate and support South-South and North-South-South (triangular) cooperation globally and within the United Nations system. UNOSSC leverages its global reach and policy and institutional capacities to assist UN agencies and developing countries to strengthen their South-South cooperation capacities. It has designed an innovative 3-in-1 delivery mechanism, endorsed by the UN General Assembly that effectively identifies, shares, and transfers successful Southern-generated development solutions for capacity building and knowledge sharing.

What does the South-South Global Health Exchange do?

The South-South Global Health Exchange facilitates the sharing and transfer of successful policies, knowledge, technologies, solutions and financing in global health through South-South and Triangular Cooperation. Responding to the international development community’s urgent call for an integrated multi-stakeholder approach to global health issues, SS-GHX focuses on maternal and child health, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and HIV/AIDS.

What is the difference between the SS-GHX and SS-GATE?

The South-South Global Assets and Technology Exchange (SS-GATE) is one of UNOSSC's three-in-one delivery mechanisms, which enables South-South and Triangular cooperation by transferring proven development solutions between countries in the South. SS-GATE facilitates market-driven and transparent exchange of technology, assets, services, and financial resources among the private sector, public sector, and civil society for inclusive growth of the countries in the South.

SS-GHX is thr SS-GATE Track that focuses on global health, utilizing the same business model as the SS-GATE system, with the aim to scale-up and transfer successful global health solutions to areas of need. SS-GHX was established in 2011 in cooperation with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Regional Office of the Americas, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Who does SS-GHX work with?

SS-GHX endorses a multi-stakeholder approach to South-South cooperation, engaging public and private sectors, academia and civil society and supporting public-private partnerships to enhance communication, coordination, and collaboration to collectively achieve common goals for improving global health and sustainable development.

Where does SS-GHX operate?

SS-GHX harnesses the power of innovative solutions taking place in emerging economies, middle income countries, least developed countries (LDCs), Land-Locked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). SS-GHX operates in Africa, Asia and the pacific, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.
