The underlying reason was the postcoded entered was a PO Box. Google's geocoder does not support PO Box postcodes from what I can tell.
Another problem I discovered was that we're using the v2 of the Google API which was due to be retired in March but is definitely turning off 8 September 2013. So we need another solution.
After looking into things I think it might make more sense just to use pre-geocoded data in our app, there's a bunch of sources around the internet and it will be faster than an API call.
