Thanks! I'm definitely aware of this napari feature, and I've been playing with it a bit on the cli-overlay branch.
I still have to sort through many corner cases before it's ready to merge---it's been tricky to get it to work smoothly in ND.
Based on my experience so far, I doubt this feature will be faster than RGB overlays. But it is extremely helpful for interpretation. I've mostly been working on it as needed for my own QoL...so it's unlikely to merge ahead of AQLM unless there's an urgent need.
Currently we render full RGB images for orientation overlays. This can be slow for 3D overlays.
Napari also has ND vector layers that can be colored by angle. Not sure about the performance but maybe worth trying?
This is completely QoL and low priority.
