One of my all-time favorite local birds, the Norther Mockingbird. This is a 'Currently Analyzing' spectrogram that I captured while listening to this male for several minutes going through his Rolodex of birdsongs to impress the ladies with his vast repertoire. This spectrogram shows 5 different calls in his string :)
For those wondering, he did land a mate . . . a few times this year!!!

I'm just north of the range of Carolina Chickadee, and my BNP continues to identify more than 1/2 the chickadee calls as Carolina. I took the time to look at all the chickadees coming to my feeder and listening for the song and have only detected Black-capped Chickadees. I could just exclude Carolinas from the list, but I'd rather have BNP accurately distinguish the two. Merlin doesn't seem to make the mistake, but that may be based on a geographic exclusion.

I'm pulling my hair out to try get the chart aligned with the table (or even center aligned)!!

I've also put up a "Lowest detections today" page to highlight false positives and rarities:

The intention is to add the same views to show the last 7 days, last 30 days and from start of recordings, probably with extended scopes (Top 90% of recognitions, bottom 10% of recognitions). Hopefully I can get these ranges as user inputs on the pages and get the charts and labels to scale dynamically.

Patrick - more than happy for you to grab whatever you feel is useful and integrate into the System. - rather you do it than me as I'm unfamiliar with Github.

Be careful in the Python scripts, as I have had to filter my data by location which may break at other locations. I will try make a general purpose single location version.

I'm also going to install the bullseye image as suggested and continue development on that.

Also, I've already changed the scripts for my location and can probably get that standardized relatively easily.

I'm going to let us keep tinkering with the graphs before I put any into the system proper -- I suspect we will all have some input about which of these charts and graphs are the most used and informative.

To center the graphs, try adding the section below to the "<style>" for the element:

style="width: 75%;padding-left: 15%;"

You can see how it is used in the "viewdb.php" script. It can go either in a "<style>" block or tacked into the image element. Let me know if you're on the NoMachine and I can hop in and be more specific about where that ought to go.

Eurasian Pygmy Owl Monitoring in Dresden, Saxony

Although results are preliminary and origin from a technical test of a BirdNET-Pi, I can report the following interesting results:

• BirdNET-Pi was active from 27th, October till November, 28th, so about one full month of 24h listening/extracting
• Eurasian Pygmy Owl was extracted 93 times in that month
• Calls are exclusively from these dates: November, 11th, 12th, 14th, 17th, 21st, 22nd, 24th, 25th, 27th, 28th
• From the data, you can see (hear :-) that Eurasian Pygmy Owl very rarely calls spontaneously, so it is very hard to detect by only doing census walks
• autumn call season for Eurasian Pygmy Owl does not seem to be restricted to September/October, but extends well into November
• autumn calls are exclusively heard in the morning in a very short time frame (15min) just after civil dawn
• contrary to the literature no calls were recorded in the evening dusk

I've managed to run BirdNET-Pi with video simultaneously without either falling over (excuse my composition and focus, but its a proof of concept at the moment - thats a Bulbul's bum on the apple in the fruit feeder and a little mannikins on the seed feeder)-

Bullseye uses libcamera which has great functionality which I am exploring, and can be built for object detection if TFlite is installed.

@mcguirepr89 - you can nomachine into my second system and have a look see if you think its worth pursuing incorporating a camera?

I don't have any cameras to test with, so it seems your second system will be the one for tinkering with that. Do you know whether Allen BirdCam stuff is open-sourced? If so, it would be the best option for your neck of the woods I would image.

Today I have started my BirdNET-Pi station which I have been planning and working on for a while and some have probably seen that I got some help from Patrick when I encountered problems.
Right now it's winter here in Sweden and not so many species, but fun to have the page up and running. I have done translation into Swedish and also some personal adaptations. Feel free to go in and watch if you want: https://birdnet.svardsten.se/

looks great! And you are using a really high end audio setup that should enable you to enjoy your recordings and get the most out of BirdNET-Pi !
I would be interested how you cover your microphones to shelter them from rain and wind. Could you post a photograph of your real world setup of the mics outside ?
Also, I would be interested whether/why you need an additional power supply for the Focusrite USB sound interface (you mention that you used a USB hub. Did you experience any problems without the hub ?)

I have mounted the microphone (Behringer B5) under our patio and the protection against rain is a simple masonite board above. I think moisture is harder to protect against than rain and snow. Therefore, I have wrapped a couple of turns with plastic wrap, the kind you use for food, around the part that does not pick up sound and on the outside I wrapped PVC tape down over the cable. We'll see how long it lasts. I have not mounted the other microphone (a shotgun) yet, but it will be on a flexible arm that I can turn around towards the sky or ground. I am also going to use it for a recorder and then I just need to change the cable and insert an AA battery in the microphone.

I bought a powered USB hub because I read that the Pi computer does not have power enough for the accessories, but I do not know if that is true, I never tested without. Both microphones are powered by 48 Volt phantom power from the Scarlett 2i2 box.

Thanks a lot for the information and the photograph ! From my experience, making microphones waterproof and setting them up for long-lasting field monitoring is the hardest part of the whole thing! So, having experiences from others is very helpful.

My experience is that those cheap little DIY electret microphone capsules are comparatively resistant against moisture and water. Commercially sold dynamic microphones differ a lot in their sensitivity against moisture and one will have to try and see how it goes. Also yesterday I realized that kitchen cellophane significantly dampens the audio volume. However I have not realized (at least with my ears --> up to 11kHz) that it significantly dampens the high frequencies. But you said you did not cover the mic capsule itself, but only the other mic parts.

I have also used the Scarlett i2i and I can confirm that the RPi can power it from the USB port. However, it should depend on the wall plug power supply you use for the RPi which should probably have at least 3 Amperes supply.

I have now mounted my second microphone, a "the t.bone EM 9600". It is a shotgun that I put on a gooseneck microphone holder so that I can turn it in any direction. Right now it can cover a larger part of the surroundings than the omnidirectional microphone does, but can also be aimed at the sky when the migratory birds arrive. It is mounted under a roof and with a simple moisture barrier made of plastic film
The idea is also that by simply changing the cable and inserting an AA battery, instead of 48 Volt phantom power, I will be able to use it to make long audio recordings. Fun to experiment!

You have to take into account that mixing several microphones also increases the background noise, especially with cheaper microphones, but it remains to be seen.

Hi folks - I have been doing a bunch of testing with different mics. My initial choice used a $20 USB conference (Boundary) mic like used in conference rooms. That mic introduced lots of noise that varied day-to-day and eventually it quit working entirely.

I think the best results so far were using my Zoom Handy24 usb interface (powered by the RPi successfully) with a Behringer dynamic mic. Not wanting to make the usb interface permanent, I then tried a MXL USB large condensor mic. It also introduced a lot of noise and bird songs were very faint. My last and current setup uses a Maono USB lavalier mic obtained via Amazon. So far the results are very close to what I was getting with the Zoom and Behringer dyamamic mic setup. Since we are in a drought crisis here in Southern California, weather exposure isn't a problem currently, but I have a covered porch that adds protection. My long-term plan is to build a birdhouse that contains the RPi and mic in one package, and that will be hung under the eves on my house. I can post pics when complete.

Once Tim sends you your BirdWeather ID, you'll need to input that ID in your /home/pi/BirdNET-Pi/birdnet.conf file where you will see the variable BIRDWEATHER_ID=. Simply paste your ID to the right of the equals sign (=) and your next detection will appear in https://app.birdweather.com! Please let me know if you have any questions or encounter any trouble.
Currently, the link for your BirdNET-Lite log is still not usable, so I will be unable to view the log to confirm that the detections are POSTing properly. From the local network, however, you should be able to see in your "BirdNET-Lite Log" page that the python script will get called with an extra flag when it detects an non-empty BIRDWEATHER_ID variable. Your new log entry would look something like this:

Thanks for the information and your list. It is good to know that the Lite version makes a selection of possible species. The ones I wondered a bit about were "Hirundo rustica" and "Hippolais icterina", species that are found here in summer, but definitely not now, the selection may not be completely 100%. Since there has not yet been a species that would never be here, I continue on the list I have.

Everything now works as intended with my BirdNET-Pi station and I have therefore made a drawing of what my solution looks like technically. I already had my own domain, router and NAS with reverse proxy function and wanted to build on that solution. Of course, there are other ways to solve this, but this one suited me and maybe it can be helpful for others who want to try this.

I have included information about the weather outside our house on the BirdNET-Pi page. I have my own weather station that updates a number of html templates every five minutes and sends these to my web host. I have added a template that produces a simple text file with temperature, wind speed, wind direction and rainfall since midnight. I then download the text file with an iframe tag to top.html in BirdNET-Pi.

Other solutions could be to put more info in a pop-up window or use web scraping technology if you do not have your own data.

Including weather info in BirdNET-Pi has been discussed in another thread, but then it was about saving local weather in the database.

On the bird observatory's site, I have now added the last hour's weather observations from the official weather station located nearby managed by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute. When it comes to migratory birds, the weather often has a big impact.

I collect data from an open API and use Javascript in index.php to read the JSON data. If someone else wants to do the same, I share the code below. Put the code after the body tag.

Are there any recommendations for a camera? I think I would use a fixed-focus webcam, preferably providing >50 fps, which is imho more important than 4K resolution. 1080p would be nice if it can provide >50 fps. A good quality lens would be nice, too, if available.
Don't know if night vision would be useful. I don't think so, but if you think different, please tell me the reason.

The V2 camera for the pi is actally pretty good for around 25 Euro. There is a night vision version of it, but you will have tinted and blurry daytime pictures with it. Some switchable cameras exist. What is your intended use for it?

Live video streaming of the birdfeeder one day. Picture quality is important. I have a raspi cam somewhere lying around but it is imo not a good camera at all. Another point is the angle of view. I found good webcams with 1080p and 60 fps, but also with 90° angle. Further, I found a Vario Zoom camera with 1080p and 60 fps, which seems to be a good choice from the specs (for example ELP-USBFHD08S-MFV) but I don't know about video and picture quality. btw: it would be even nicer if it would be possible to use it as photo trap to get high quality pics of the visiting birds. In my area it would mostly be blackbirds, tits, robins, redstarts etc.

For best compatibility i would stick to the original pi cameras, (USB Webcams are not always supported by the software.) Have a look at the "high quality" pi camera, you can also switch the lenses depending on your application. Also "Arducam" has a couple of nice cameras which are compatible. Waveshare offers a really nice low light camera with Sony Starvis sensor which i will use for birds at the feeder (sadly only USB though).

I did not yet know there is a HQ Pi cam. Nice, because the lens can be changed and seems to deliver a much better quality. I have an older Pi cam lying around which I first wanted to use for testing but I think it will make more sense to simply buy the new camera plus zoom or tele lens. Is it possible to use FullHD resolution with 50 fps on the pi? 30 fps seems to be the standard, but is it the limit?

  (i know, an salad bowl has not an parabol cutting!!! .... it works!!!)

From balcony in the third floor the unit looks down to the bird-food-station in garden on air line distance 30m.
Still the big distance, small birds like Zaunkönig (Eurasian wren) or Blaumeise (Eurasian blue tit) are detected.

I followed the installation instruction Rasberry Pi 0W2 and 3B[+] Installation Guide

Finally, when the installation is complete and the system has come back up after its last reboot, go to "Tools" > "Settings" > "Advanced Settings" to adjust the "Recording Length" up to 30 seconds. Don't forget to "Update Settings."

The picture shows on top under Currently Analyzing the 30sec saved sonogram at 24/02/2023 16:15:55. The KI separate an 6 sec part to identify an Kohlmeise (Parus major) with 93% confidence.

Since I'm new to fieldrecording and also GitHub I apologize in advance for stupid questions!

I set my pi up yesterday and first of all it's working quite well, but there are still some issues I can't solve, so thanks for your help!

My setup is:

Raspberry Pi 3b+
Rode AI Micro
2x Primo EM272 clippies (TRRS plug)
24.000 mAh powerbank for power supply, since I wanted a mobile Birdnetpi

The first issues was already discussed here:

(edit: changed the sound card settings as adviced to dsnoop and everything is working fine now, crackling got less (once per 30s recording)
I got rid of the crackling noise by changing the sound card setting, but now it won't analyze the recordings anymore. (no activity in the log as well)
I just can listen in live modus, with much better quality then the default settings, but also I don't really know to what I need to change the settings (I tried Card1 and AIMicro)

Another issue is that I can't really access the web terminal.
(edit: I tried firefox it worked just fine, with safari it just wouldn't work)
I use my phone hotspot as internet connection and when I try accessing it via my computer it says "connection closed", while when accessing it via my phone everything almost works fine, but I can't really change anything (mostly because of the layout on the phone).

Yeah putting it in Advanced Settings is sufficient, though that card name there is incorrect. See the example below for the correct usage:

How is your battery life? I found that 3B runs ca 20h on 20 000 mAh power bank. When I limited analyzing to only dusk til dawn then it runs like 32hours. I will get a bigger 50 000 mAh power bank and also a Witty Pi to completely shut down the Pi when it is not recording. I guess that way I could stretch it to almost a week of battery life. (yes, Pi 02W would be the best option but it is nowhere to be found)

I'm interested in learning how you integrated birdnet-pi into home assistant. Did you use mqtt? If so what broker would you recommend? I'm new to it all. I'd prefer a private one but I don't really know the difference

I do indeed use MQTT. This sort of thing was messed about with in #342. Have a look in there and see our various ways of doing things. It really depends on exactly what you want to do. Have a gander in that discussion and see how you go.
I use a local broker on my HA system. I believe I installed the bog-standard one (sudo apt install -y mosquitto) when I did my initial install but it's been a while! :)

Even on a dark and stormy morning I am getting a few backyard bird detections. The new model has excelled at detecting House Finches and European Starlings. Love the thumbnails though I think it's mixed up its crested and its crowned?

The thumbnails are fetched from searches on Flickr. They are not selected by BirdNET-Pi so your milage might vary 😅

TLDR: Looks like a Pi 3 is sufficient, especially if running off a USB SSD. Use a USB microphone.

Earlier this week, I installed Birdnet-PI on a 2GB RPi4 with attached cheapo USB sound card and the microphone from a Sun Sparcstation "pizza box". :).

Of note, the RPi OS filesystem is on a 120GB USB SSD, not a microSD card. This makes the Pi subjectively much faster, and avoids wearing out an SD card. Let me know if you want detail on this hardware.

I put the microphone in a finely-crafted enclosure to offer protection from insects and rain.

The Pi-4 is running fairly hot, in fact is throttling itself to 60C, I think. I only have a small heat sink on the CPU. The sound quality is poor, dominated by low frequency hum. But it has detected most of the common birds in our yard.

Today I set up an older RPi 3B, also booting off an SSD drive. It's only USB, as the Pi3 does not have USB3. Still it's quite responsive, and is keeping up with the incoming recordings. I also ordered and installed a BOYA USB microphone, which has much better sound quality.

Here's the Pi 3B, showing the SSD and USB cable headed out the window to the mic. The small circuit board is a buck converter to 5 volts.

The Pi is bolted to the lid of a takeout food container, which I'll screw onto a post outside. The body of the container will snap on and offer weather protection. I am undecided on whether it needs a fan.

At the moment in SW England (Somerset, next to a park), our corvids (Some jays, lots of magpies and rooks/ravens/crows), sea gulls and pigeons are predominant. The song birds are an occasional blur between trees.

I put up a traditional birdbox late in 2022 - 18mm ply, 25mm entrance for blue tits Cyanistes caeruleus I put a camera overlooking it and ... discovered just how fast blue tits move. I saw one whizz through our wrought iron fence with a 10cm spacing. It furled its wings, rotated and unfurled its wings on the other side so fast I perceived it as still images! OK so that was a successful fledge but no idea what went on.

I replaced the box with one with a camera in it. It is more a lozenge shape. Wired it up to my home Zoneminder and all is good.

We are fairly sure that the current occupant is the original male. He doesn't come back every night but that might be correlated with what we are up to. We board dogs (0-6 at a time) and the box is roughly 1.5m away from me now. It is under a roof overhang and never has direct sun on it at any time of the year. Our house also dulls noise and light pollution for it.

Anyway, who knew that a blue tit looks like this when asleep? When you weigh 10g you must have to fluff your feathers to ensure you don't accidentally chill too much when asleep:

I designed a 3D-printable shroud to hold a Samson Go Mic for my BirdNet-Pi installation. All of the files and information are posted on Thingiverse here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6415101. This is a 3D-printed shroud that will hold a Samson Go Mic for a BirdNET-PI installation. The microphone will mount in the shroud and the shroud connects to a weather-proof job box via the M30 threaded tube. The shround has a gland to secure window screen with 0.175" spline. I power the Pi via a Power-over-Ethernet injector and I have run Pi devices outside in boxes like this for many years for weather stations.

I find it seems to work well, with maybe only a slightly reduced detection rate. The mic seems to be very sensitive. I fact I can see when the PoE fan kicks on in the spectrum.

BirdNet Pi is a pretty well coded webapp, with a good eye to security and convenience. Do note that the main pages could be used to bring it to its knees by a baddie but why would anyone bother? Pis are quite powerful machines these days and as part of a botnet they can be quite nasty. So ...

Please do regularly update via Tools (login) -> System Controls -> Update. I suggest doing it monthly if you can, which is the IT standard. Microsoft decided that the first Tuesday in a month is when they release updates to Windows and the world largely followed on. We call it: "Patch Wednesday" hereabouts because that's when we notice it in the UK. If you want to follow Cyber Essentials standards then do it fortnightly. Quarterly is good enough for most people. You decide!

I am about to deploy some BNP in schools which have very locked down IT. The approach I am taking (along with using other sensors) is to use the MQTT stream and then reaggregate the data away from the source devices. This also allows me to use other data sources (such as a beehive and batbox monitoring and environmental sensors and...) We can then build custom dashboards on the data for specific client groups. I have structured the MQTT output so it is more readily parseable and extendable. See dundeebionet/# on test.mosquitto.org:1883 for the stream (currently just from my home pi, but I have built a LoRa gateway to capture the data from a Pi just outside of WiFi range which I will hopefully get commissioned in the next week or so.)

A friend showed me birdNETID on his phone, did some googling and here I am!
Only been at it a few days, but I'm hooked.

I added MotionPlus to the pi for video:

I rotated the image to make better use of screen space, and got the ptz controls working:

Then you need the MotionPlus .deb file that matches the piwheel 3.9 issue, ie for bullseye:

Put it on your pi and:
sudo dpkg -i bullseye_motionplus_0.1.1-1_arm64_202308.deb

This will create some stock config files in /etc/motionplus. I modified them to support my Logitech C920 HD Pro Webcam.
Hide the stock files, and create a link to your home directory:

Love this! I may have to give it a try. My BirdNet Pi is running on a PI4 in the Sierra Nevada mountains. I'm not there a whole lot so this would be very cool!
