CPU Lockup if sensor is not connected #1

On an STM32F103VBT6 the CPU completely looks up if no sensor is present. When the sensor is connected the library works normally. I'm pretty certain the problem isn't limited to this one CPU

I can confirm that I'm getting a hang on ESP32 as well. I can see the sensor on the I2C bus with address 0x29 if I scan for devices.
