We are moving to a new office in Berlin with a dedicated server room. This issue is to track the required upgrades, purchases and network plans in the new office.

Server Room:

  • UPS
  • Ensure the power outlet has enough amps
  • Ensure the room has a fire alarm
  • Raspberry pi - to be used as a controller + Arm Node
  • New 16 port switch (rackmounted) to account for future upgrades
  • Something for power usage monitoring
  • Temperature monitor
  • Get an old computer monitor with VGA ports

Office:

  • Internet connection - ideally 2 in order to have a failover
  • Pfsense firewall
  • Ubiquiti switch with PoE injectors built in for all the APs x 2 (for each half of the office/cabinet with patch panel)
  • 2x Ubiquiti APs + 1x Ubiquiti flex HD or some omnidirectional one
  • Patch cables

General:
We decided to build up the networks with 3 VLANs: Regulars, Server room, Guests/IoT. The We would benefit from network separation and can decide what to expose in the server room via firewall rules. Guests/IoT can get their own landing page/QR code to sign up and will have no access to the other VLANs.

Update:

  • Ask for keys to server cabinet
  • Figure out connection between office half A & B
  • Power outlet inside server room
  • Lock for server room
  • Network map to avoid having to diagnose it
  • Crimping tool + network tester
  • Fire alarm inside rooms

Adding to the wishlist of requirements:

  • VPN connection into the office network
  • A LTE/4G failover connection, if no wired failover connection is available. Additional hardware module would be required for it + a SIM card.

We already have a VPN into the office via our DappNode (checked the box)
The FailOver we can do via Telekom - cheaper than LTE/4G - even cheaper than the HofNetz line we have currently ..
