at the moment dtwallmax is set to 12 hours by default, meaning that if a simulation will not produce output in 12 hours then the snapshot frequency is increased in order to achieve this.
This is good but wholly confusing because the files keep the same names, i.e. disc_00001, disc_0002, disc_00003, disc_00004. So it is not at all clear to the user that the time interval between files has changed.
I would propose that we change the naming scheme when the dump interval is changed. One idea would just be to write "sub-dumps", e.g.
Not sure if this would be even more confusing, however, and would require some "memory" of what the original snapshot interval was. At the moment we just change dtmax and we are done and hence the files just keep adding 1 to the output.
Would something like the above be useful? Any better ideas here?
