To make things more realistic, add challenge and at last give Bill Kerman a job, I suggest that welding of ports should require an Engineer (of a certain level, maybe) on EVA nearby.
Sub-idea 1: If KIS is installed, the Engineer should have a welding tool in their inventory.
Sub-idea 2: The welding should require EC (100? 1000? IDK).

This would not create an issue when the craft are landed but in orbit it could cause the Kerbal to be flung away from the craft as both craft move during the welding process.
Also keeping this a separate feature from KIS allows players that do not use KIS to be able to connect craft in orbit or far from the KSC.
I realise its not a vote, but if five cents are okay... I think this change just complicates things... realism is not ultimate goal. KSP is not an authentic NASA-grade simulator. Its "make it fly and make it fun" simulator.
