There is a beta release of VFD SWMR mode that may be incorporated in HDF5 2.0. See discussion here: https://forum.hdfgroup.org/t/vfd-swmr-beta-2-release/9796

This would be a replacement for the current SWMR mode and would allow HDF5 objects (groups, datasets, attributes) to be created and destroyed in the course of a reader-writer session.
