Overdrive (and possibly other distributors) offer through their API the ability to suspend a hold: to keep you place in the holds queue but allow other people to go in front of you until you're ready. This ability could be made available to patrons.

In addition to coding work, this requires an extension to the OPDS protocol and UI design for the mobile interface.
